Mayor’s Artist Series
SALEM, ORE— The Salem Conference Center is proud to announce the 2nd Annual Mayor’s Oregon Artist Series which opens July 12th 2008 and extends through July of 2009. The kick-off celebration and reception is planned for July 12, 2008 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm. The evening will be hosted by Mayor Janet Taylor which will include viewing of all selected art, lavish hors d’oeuvres & live jazz music. Tickets are available for $15 and are available through the Mary Lou Zeek Gallery (335 State Street, 503-581-3229) or the Salem Conference Center (200 Commercial Street SE, 503-589-1700). Tickets may also be ordered over the phone, by calling the Salem Conference Center at 503-589-1700.
Inspired by the idea of displaying art in the public galleries of the Salem Conference Center, The Mayor’s Oregon Artists Series is a year-long exhibit featuring work from artists around the state. Having art on public exhibition in the Salem Conference Center struck a cord with Mayor Janet Taylor as a means to attract and engage visitors and residents alike. The goal of the City of Salem is to build a permanent collection of art at the Salem Conference Center both to showcase Oregon artists and to promote the arts in Salem’s downtown. The Mayor’s support and enthusiasm for this exhibit has created another Salem tradition: each year, one piece of art will be selected Best of Show and will be granted The Mayor’s Purchase Award by a panel of jurors and become part of the Salem Conference Center’s permanent public collection.
The second annual Mayor’s Oregon Artist Series show will consist of paintings featuring exclusively Oregon artists. The artists’ works will be on display at the Conference Center for one year, and will be followed annually by additional art shows. The Mayor’s Purchase Award for the year 2007 was of Jim Mattingly’s painting “Arlie Autumn”. This acrylic on canvas painting is on display at the Conference Center as part of the City of Salem’s permanent collection.
The Conference Center Lobby is open Monday – Friday, 8-5pm.
